Entrepreneur in New York, Robert Hamley was awarded 2nd place at a US vendor show for the best unique, innovative, and useful product for his trademarked flower preservation kit, Forever Flowers. In addition to his business enterprises in New York, Robert Hamley enjoys outdoor sports such as fishing. He won a fishing tournament in Key West with his catch of a short-billed Mediterranean spearfish.
A member of the marlin species, spearfish are found near the surface of the open waters of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans, where they feed on smaller fish and squid. Relatively short-lived, this game fish matures at two years of age and often doesn’t live past three, with five years of age considered its maximum lifespan. They can achieve a length of up to 91 inches, and while some have been caught weighing in at 100 pounds or more, the average is around 35 pounds.
Tackle required for deep-sea catches of this size includes an off-shore fishing rod of six to seven feet in length, a heavy saltwater casting reel with a 20-pound test fishing line, at least a half-dozen feet of 40- to 80-pound test monofilament leader, and hooks size 5 to 7. Live bait, such as herring or google eyes, will work best. Trolling with this equipment offers the opportunity to score some large game fish, such as the short-billed spearfish.
